Cleaners in Food Courts

Our group plans to work with the cleaners in food courts, who work hard to provide us with a clean environment to dine in. We want to work with them as we feel that there are many ways to lessen their workload. Through our observations and interviews, we noticed that many people in food courts are often inconsiderate towards the Cleaners. People leave their trays on tables despite the having return-trays shelves nearby or making the table dirty, not pushing in chairs after their meals, being rude to the cleaners.

Initially, our idea of the project was to spread awareness of appreciation to cleaners. However, after interviewing the cleaners and hearing their side of the story, we realized that appreciation is not what they needed. Many of them feel happier and appreciated when people are more considerate/help to lessen their workload indirectly by returning their trays and keeping the tables clean rather than having people say thanks to them all the time.

Even though it might be unreasonable to the public to lessen the cleaner’s workload because it is their job and they should be doing it but the tray return station is setup for public to put their trays back. By doing so, the public is been considerate and also leaving the table clean for the next user. In this way they are indirectly helping the cleaners.

We concluded that what the cleaners truly need is the public’s consideration and cooperation instead and we will be working towards that goal for our project.

“One act of kindness can powerfully affect one” so let's encourage one another to be a considerate citizen.
