After much discussion, we have prepared activities we think can be fun for the children that they can play and have fun with while learning how to be kind at the same time. The activities include “Climb the Kindness Ladder”. “Kindsville”, “KINDart” and “Guess what it is?”. For example, “Climb the Kindness Ladder” works like the game “Snake-and-Ladder”, however it was modified so that the children would learn more about kindness through this activity. The objective of this is to make the children who are aged 5 and 6 years old realise that acts of kindness they do for their friends and teachers will brighten anyone’s day. Another example is “Kindsville”. With the kindness cards provided by Singapore Kindness movement, we are to interact with the children and can also include skits to introduce them to the 5 main kind magical words which are “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, “sorry” and “you are welcome”. After teaching them how to use the words, they would be split into smaller groups and will present the sentences or situations that they have prepared to the others. Each group will be guided by a student. This will enable the children to know when to use these kind words in a conversation.
Through the activities and the programme, we are able to spread kindness to children who can also spread the knowledge they have learnt from us to their other friends in the future. They would also be polite and more likeable among teachers and friends as they have learnt the appropriate ways to use these words in situations to make them happy or appreciated. The children will also learn to be involved in doing acts of kindness for the people in their community and also learn the importance of teamwork and cooperation.
Before we can start with the programme on that day, we will need to prepare the necessary materials required for each and every one of the activities. We have to give the children clear instructions, basic rules to follow and an introduction to the programme. We would also need to prepare more games just in case we have to change the activity due to problems that may appear on the day itself.
