What are their needs?

Littering is a growing problem in Singapore and it is important to help Singaporeans adopt and develop anti-littering habits from young!

http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/environment/why-is-littering-still-a-problem-in-singapore

Problem Situation

Young children need to be aware of the importance of keeping the environment clean by not littering.

Empathise

• Researched on the state of awareness in our children on the consequences of littering

• Interviewed young children to gain deeper insights and understand their thoughts on littering.

• Most interviewees were interested in learning about keeping the environment clean.

• Most children aged 5 to 6 have a short attention span

o Animation

o Game - Pick-Up Litter Game (in the form of competition between groups)

[endif]

• Children may not understand complex words

o Simple English was used for the animation and we will refrain from using complex language when interacting with them

[endif]

• Children may be too eager to participate in the games that we are going to have and misbehave

o Reward them with small prizes, such as stationery and stickers, if they are well-behaved until the end of the session

o Teacher to supervise the activities in case of any emergencies

Define

Through our research, we have decided on educating the young children about keeping the environment clean by not littering through an animation, Arts and Crafts, Pick Up Litter Game and a colouring session.

Ideate

Through this session with the children, we hoped to educate the young and build a sense of compassion in them. This would benefit the children as they will then be more aware of the environmental issues and the detrimental consequences of littering, Hence developing a sense of responsibility in them as they learn to do their part in keeping the environment clean. By teaching them the negative impacts of littering, they will then be more considerate in their actions as well.

Activities to be held for the children

Introduction:

o Time limit: 2 minutes

o Introduce our names and purpose of the session

o Get to know the children’s names

• End (Giving of gifts):

o Time limit: 3 minutes

o Each of the children will receive a gift from us for their efforts

• Main event: screening of an animation created by our group on:

✔ Negative effects of littering

✔ The right way to bin

o After the animation, we would sum up the negative impacts of littering.

o Time limit: 5 minutes

Big idea - “do not litter!”

• Arts and Crafts (link to Pick Up Litter Game):

o Total groups: 4

o Each group will design a bin

o Time limit: 15 minutes

o Sparkle Tots would provide craft materials such as colour pencils and scissors. The large cardboards (bins) would be brought by us.

Pick Up Litter Game:

o Allow children to apply what they have learnt from the animation

o Children to remain in their 4 groups

o Each group to sort out the different litter that will be laid out on the ground in the form of pictures (plastic bottles, banana peels, cans and hamburgers)

o There is a path that each group has to follow, after collecting the trash, to place the different litter into the bins that their own group has created

o One person can only collect one trash at a time and has to follow the group’s path to the bin

o Time limit: 8 minutes

o Have to complete within the 8 minutes

o The group with the most number of trash in their bin wins

o Winners would receive prizes for their efforts

Colouring:

o To test if children has understood the idea of not littering; sum up the entire session

o They will have to colour at least one colouring page before moving onto a maze that focuses on trash collection
