Stage 1: Building Empathy (Interviews and Empathy Map)

Our class EXCO visited Bethel Daycare Centre and we interviewed Ms Karen, the principal, and Ms Michelle, the vice-principal. We found out about the children’s daily timetables as well as the facilities they had. Since we were planning on organizing games that would help the children break out of their comfort zones and daily routines, we made sure to take note of it so as to ensure that we did not organise activities that they did everyday as our programme would be very mundane for the children if we were to do that.

Based on our own observation, we also found out that the children responded exceptionally well to songs. As we were having our conversation with the principals near the playground, we saw about 10 children playing around happily at the playground. When it was time to leave the playground, their Chinese teacher started singing a Chinese song about getting ready to leave. Immediately, all the children stopped playing and quietly lined up in twos! We were very amazed and we decided that we should include an element of music in our activities too, since we could tell that the children responded amazingly well to music.
